Jon Drezner of Calabasas High scored with two seconds left to lift American Roundball Corp.’s Ventura County team to a 61-59 win over Carson City, Nev., in the second round of the Las Vegas Invitational basketball tournament Tuesday at Nevada Las Vegas.
In another second-round game, ARC Mid-Valley defeated Indiana, 100-72.
Drezner’s basket capped a run that began with Ventura trailing by 12 points with six minutes left.
“We came out slow and got behind,” Coach Brian Breslin said. “It was our defense that won it. They didn’t score the last seven times down the floor.”
Kevin Logan, a 6-6 forward from Westlake High, had 11 points and 16 rebounds for Ventura despite playing with a fractured wrist.
Ventura faces Slam ‘n’ Jam Los Angeles today. The winner will advance to the championship bracket of the tournament, which includes high school players with remaining eligibility from around the country.
“We have to play much better than we did today for us to win,” Breslin said. “Slam ‘n’ Jam has won two games by an average of 30 points.”
In the Mid-Valley game, Doug Meekins, who is undecided whether he will attend Crenshaw High in the fall, scored 24 points and Chris Mills of Fairfax added 18 in the one-sided victory.
Mid-Valley plays Louisiana today in a third-round game.
