PALM SPRINGS — The desert hacienda of disgraced TV preacher Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy was sold Friday to a self-made pie magnate for $600,000.
Sam Apodaca, who worked his way up from janitor to owner of Luv-ly Fruit Pies Inc., paid the asking price for the rambling 3,200-square-foot southwestern-style home, said real estate agent Emma Howard. Howard had listed the house for Bakker after he resigned his ministry this year after revelations of a sexual escapade with a church secretary in a Florida hotel.
The single-story home, scene of almost constant media stakeouts as the Bakkers’ story unfolded earlier this summer, has four bedrooms, including one in a guest house, five baths and a swimming pool.
“It was more or less an impulse thing,” Apodaca, 52, said. “We said we wanted a home and we decided this would be it.”
It’s the fourth home for Apodaca and his wife, who plan to use it on weekends and possibly retire there.
