A Culver City man awaiting trial on a murder charge fell to his death Sunday while attempting to escape from the 11th-floor jail at the Hall of Justice in the Los Angeles Civic Center, sheriff’s deputies said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan Williams said Dwight Neal, 24, evidently removed the screen from a window in a hallway outside his jail module, broke the glass and slipped out the window carrying a 200-foot hand-braided rope at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday.
“Deputies were alerted by other prisoners yelling,” Williams said. “They found Neal lying unconscious on the sidewalk below the broken window and took him to French Hospital, which is nearby, where he was pronounced dead.”
