GENEVA — Two U.N. relief agencies on Monday appealed for emergency grain supplies to feed up to 6 million Ethiopians threatened with famine next year.
The U.N. Disaster Relief Office and the Food and Agriculture Organization called for the balance of the 950,000 tons of grain requested by Ethiopia for 1988. The international community has already pledged 200,000 tons.
Drought in Ethiopia’s northern provinces of Eritrea and Tigre is expected to cause vital cereal crops to fail for the second time in three years.
