During the news coverage of the Oct. 1 earthquake, Channel 4 newscaster Linda Alvarez made the comment that we were very lucky this was not “the Big One.” This was possibly the most idiotic statement I have ever heard in regard to an earthquake of that magnitude. I realize there is a very strong possibility than an earthquake of a much greater magnitude may hit us at any given time. However, wouldn’t it have been nice if that was “the Big One,” and we could all breathe a sigh of relief?
