KNBC-TV’s live cut-ins concerning the Oct. 1 earthquake were, at best, the most embarrassing, irresponsible I’ve ever seen. While Channels 2 and 7 handled the situation in a reassuring, professional way, KNBC’s Kent Shocknek acted like an amateurish alarmist. Even though it was a serious situation, remarks such as “This could be the Big One” were inappropriate for a professional journalist. If there are any future emergencies in Los Angeles, I definitely will not be tuning to KNBC. How informative can a newsman be if he conducts his reports from under his desk?
