Strong A-Test Rocks Nevada

YUCCA FLAT, Nev. — A thermonuclear weapon more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan was detonated beneath the Nevada desert today, triggering a force that rocked southern Nevada like a large earthquake.
Some residents in Las Vegas, 85 miles from ground zero, felt the earth move seconds after the 9 a.m. blast which was set off one hour later than scheduled because of unstable surface winds at the Nevada Test Site. The weapons-related test was the 13th announced nuclear detonation by the United States this year.
