El Modena 18, Canyon 7--Tailback Pat Leborio gained 134 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in 25 carries as the Vanguards defeated the Comanches in Fred Kelly Stadium at El Modena High School.
Leborio ignited an El Modena (4-3, 1-1) ground attack that totalled 277 yards. The Vanguards added 34 yards passing. Canyon (2-5, 0-2) managed 72 yards on the ground and 22 passing.
On the Vanguards’ first possession, Canyon’s Chris Rodwick picked up a loose lateral and returned it 60 yards to give the Comanches a 7-0 lead.
After that, it was all Leborio and the Vanguards. On the first play of the second quarter, Leborio broke loose for a 39-yard touchdown run, and on the Vanguards’ next possession, quarterback Marcus Esposito made it 12-7 on a five-yard run.
Leborio scored the only touchdown in the second half on a six-yard run with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter. Canyon stopped running plays on El Modena’s first two conversion attempts, and a pass failed on the third.
El Modena fullback Steve McClaskey gained 87 yards in 11 carries, and Esposito gained 48 yards in 10 attempts. Esposito completed 3 of 7 for 34 yards.
Tailback Eddie Washington led Canyon’s attack with 49 yards in 9 carries. The Comanches completed 3 of 7 passes for 22 yards.
