Sockers Put Katakalidis on Injured Reserve

SAN DIEGO — Injured defender George Katakalidis, whom the Sockers said they cut with pay last Friday, has instead been placed on the injured-reserve list, Socker president Ron Cady said Tuesday.
Under the Major Indoor Soccer League collective bargaining agreement, a player cannot be cut while he is injured and must continue to be paid until he is able to play. Katakalidis is recovering from surgery on a broken toe, and Cady said doctors have told him Katakalidis will be unable to train for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 months.
Cady said Katakalidis’ salary of $35,000 per year will be counted toward the team’s $1.275 million salary cap, but the salary of Katakalidis’ replacement on the roster will not count toward the cap.
