National Semiconductor said it will cut 400 jobs in a consolidation related to its purchase of Fairchild Semiconductor on Aug. 31. The move will affect all levels of employees and involves field sales operations of both companies, the Cupertino headquarters of Fairchild and the Microcomputer Products division in Portland, Ore. The merged company employs an estimated 38,000 people, including about 10,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
