A sports car went out of control at high speed on a bridge over the Los Angeles River Wednesday, crashing into another car and causing it to collide with a utility van, killing three people and injuring another.
Police said a Pontiac Fiero, driven by Juan Jiminez, 26, of Los Angeles, was westbound at about 100 m.p.h. when it struck the curb on the 6th Street bridge, skidded 150 yards, crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a Toyota sedan, hurling the sedan into a gas company van.
Jiminez died in the crash and the woman driver of the Toyota was trapped in the wreckage and died. A woman passenger in the sedan was ejected. She died shortly after arrival at County-USC Medical Center. Names of the women were withheld pending notification of relatives.
The driver of the van was released after hospital treatment for his injuries, according to police.
