PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Three-year-old Tabatha Foster sat up in bed with her dolls and sang “Itsy-Bitsy Spider” Thursday, four days after undergoing an experimental transplant in which five of her organs were replaced.
“Everything’s going great. It’s going better than doctors expected,” her father, Roy Foster, 35, said outside the intensive-care unit of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
It was her first full day off a respirator since her weekend transplant, and Tabatha joined her mother and a nurse in singing the popular nursery rhyme and playing with her dolls.
The Madisonville, Ky., girl received a new liver, pancreas, small intestine and parts of a stomach and colon during a 15-hour operation.
