The Board of Governors of the National Hockey League, meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., has discussed a plan to allow the league’s seven Canadian teams to supply one player each to the Canadian Olympic team for the Winter Games in Calgary.

NHL President John Ziegler said that a news embargo was in effect until the meetings end today.

Team Canada has proposed that the seven Canadian-based teams--Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Quebec, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver--be permitted to lend a player to the Olympic squad without subjecting that player to a waiver draft.

Other items on the board’s agenda included amending the waiver draft protected list from 16 skaters and 2 goaltenders within an organization to 18 skaters and three goalies. The amendment also would lengthen the exemption period before a player must be protected from two to three years.
