Japan has unofficially decided to retain its curbs on car exports to the United States at 2.3 million units for the next financial year, a senior official of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said. A formal announcement is expected shortly. The Japanese government has been caught between U.S. car makers, which have pressed for a reduction in the export quotas, and their Japanese counterparts, which wanted the limits scrapped entirely.
