Taiwan’s President Lee Teng-hui was elected acting chairman of the ruling Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), strengthening his position to continue the political liberalization initiated by his predecessor, Chiang Ching-kuo, who died Jan. 13. The party’s 31-member Central Standing Committee unanimously elected Lee to the post. He is a native Taiwanese, unlike previous presidents and party leaders who belonged to the mainland Chinese group led by Chiang’s father, Chiang Kai-shek. This group fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war to the Communists led by Mao Tse-tung.
