NEW YORK — Minimalist sculptor Carl Andre was acquitted today of charges of throwing his wife out of a 34th-floor window in Greenwich Village during a violent argument on his birthday.
State Supreme Court Justice Alvin Schlesinger ruled that Andre, 52, was innocent of two counts of second-degree murder in the death of Ana Mendieta, 36. “Justice has been done,” Andre said, breathing a sigh of relief and walking stony-faced from the courtroom. “I know he killed my daughter,” the victim’s mother, Racquel Mendieta, 66, a retired chemist from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said as Andre disappeared from the courtroom wearing his trademark bib overalls and blue turtleneck sweater.
