Rescuers plowed through 4 miles of snow and brush to reach a Texas man who slipped while hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains and fell 450 feet down an ice chute. Joseph Murphy, 33, of Dallas, was in fair condition with a spinal fracture at Loma Linda University Medical Center. A rescue team medic, Joe Guarrera, 27, of Azusa suffered frostbitten toes. Murphy was hiking with three friends on the 9,700-foot level of Mt. San Gorgonio when he fell. He was rescued after a snow Caterpillar from the Big Bear City Fire Department plowed through the snow and brush.
