Wooden Dove Is Shultz’s Good Luck Charm

JERUSALEM — Secretary of State George P. Shultz has invoked the powers of a good luck charm during his Middle East shuttle: a white peace dove in his Jerusalem hotel lobby.
Whenever Shultz passed through the lobby of the Jerusalem Hilton, he pulled a silver-and-white ribbon hanging from the 13-foot wooden dove, sending the bird’s wings flapping.
“When I came here to start the process, I went into the hotel and there, hanging from the ceiling, was a bird--a great big thing on a little rope you pull and the wings go and the dove flies,” he said Friday.”So I pulled it when I came in and everybody clapped, and I keep pulling it whenever I go through there in the hope that it will bring us good fortune. And that is what I wish to the people of Israel, to the Palestinians, to the people of all the neighboring countries that I have visited, good fortune and peace.”
