Merced County health officials have warned residents not to drink from or fish in waters along a 50-mile stretch of the Delta Mendota Canal, after a spill of weed oil near the town of Gustine. About 12,000 residents around the town of Dos Palos will receive drinking water pumped from underground aquifers until a hazardous materials team finishes cleaning the canal. Ranchers and farm workers who normally drink canal water have been advised to rely instead on their own wells or bottled water.
