A Federal Aviation Administration study on the feasibility of opening El Toro Marine Corps Air Station to commercial jet service is scheduled to be released Thursday to members of the House appropriations subcommittee on transportation. A draft version of the report has concluded that military fighter planes and commercial flights could coexist, congressional sources revealed last week.
The study was authorized in a catchall transportation bill passed Dec. 21 that was sponsored by Rep. Robert Carr (D-Mich.). Orange County-based politicians and military officials did not learn about the measure until January; Rep. Robert E. Badham (R-Newport Beach) later tried unsuccessfully to scuttle the study.
