College Roundup : McGrann and Morales Get Seconds

UC Irvine’s track and field teams had two second-place finishes Saturday in the Stanford Invitational track and field meet at Palo Alto.
Beth McGrann, a junior, finished second in the women’s 5,000 meters in 17 minutes 12.82 seconds, and sophomore Mike Morales placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 180-feet 9-inches.
Senior Judy McLaughlin finished third in the women’s 1,500 meters in 4:25.02, and sophomore teammates Buffy Rabbitt (4:25.05) finished fourth and Shama Factor (4:34.15) fifth.
Friday night, McLaughlin narrowly missed qualifying for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I championships in the 3,000 meters. McLaughlin finished second in 9:24, two seconds off the NCAA qualifying mark of 9:22. Oregon’s Annette Hand won the event in 9:21, and Rabbitt finished fourth in 9:27.05.
In the men’s division, Irvine’s Shawn Sandoval was third in the 10,000 meters in 31:34.50, and teammate Greg Houlgate was fourth in the 1,500 in 3:50.11. Anteater Erik Kenyon was fourth with a 16-4 3/4 mark in the pole vault, and teammate Matt Farmer was fifth in the long jump at 23-0 1/2.
Irvine’s Richard Graves placed third in the men’s 5,000 meters Friday night in 14:27.88.
In the UC Irvine Marriott men’s tennis tournament:
UC Irvine 5, Minnesota 1--Sixth-ranked Irvine (15-3, 3-0) won its eighth straight match at the UC Irvine Marriott tournament. Mark Kaplan (12-9, ranked 44th in singles) defeated Jonas Svensson (23-12, 36th), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, to lead Irvine. Richard Lubner (20-5) won his 11th straight victory by defeating Anthony Cruz, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4, and Shige Kanroji (21-8) defeated Jason Hall, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, for his seventh straight victory. The Anteaters will face No. 21 Duke (13-2) in the final today at 9 at UC Irvine.
Nebraska 6, Chapman 0--In the fifth-place semifinal, Chapman (12-7) lost its second consecutive match. Miles Walker lost to Steve Jung in No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, as Nebraska (17-9) swept the singles for the victory.
