Felony charges of attempted train derailment were filed Friday against a Huntington Park man who allegedly tried with three accomplices to knock a Southern Pacific freight off the tracks in southeast Los Angeles County.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Jim Grodin said Roberto Gonzales, 21, and three other men were spotted by sheriff’s deputies last Tuesday night trying to slide a 90-pound piece of rail onto the tracks along the train’s right-of-way between Florence Avenue and Firestone Boulevard. Gonzales was caught in a foot chase, but the other three escaped.
If convicted, he faces five to nine years in state prison. Gonzales is being held in County Jail on $5,000 bail.
