Tennis Roundup : McEnroe-Lendl Meeting Likely
- Share via
John McEnroe on Friday drew a possible fourth-round meeting with No. 1-seeded Ivan Lendl in the French Open tennis tournament.
McEnroe, seeded No. 16, will meet Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union when play opens Monday at Paris.
A year ago, McEnroe was ousted from the French Open in the first round by Horacio de la Pena of Argentina.
If McEnroe, who is suffering from a neck injury, can get past Volkov and two other opponents, he would probably face Lendl, who is aiming for his third consecutive title at Roland Garros Stadium.
Lendl likely will have an easier path. He opens against Frenchman Philippe Pech.
No. 2 Stefan Edberg and No. 3 Mats Wilander, both of Sweden, play Czechoslovaks in the first round. Edberg faces Karel Novacek, and Wilander takes on Josef Cihak.
Among the women, No. 1 Steffi Graf of West Germany meets Nathalie Guerree of France, No. 2 Martina Navratilova plays Pat Medrado of Brazil and No. 3 Chris Evert faces Judith Wiesner of Austria.
At Geneva, unseeded Isabelle Demongeot of France upset top-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of a $100,000 women’s tournament.
