A New Zealander who stunned the San Diego Yacht club by having a judge order it to accept his challenge for the America’s Cup will ask the court this week to bar the Americans from using a catamaran.
New York Supreme Court Justice Carmen Ciparick will hear arguments Wednesday on whether the San Diego Yacht Club may use a 60-foot catamaran against the 110-foot sloop that New Zealand financier Michael Fay is planning to sail in the races.
Fay said the catamaran would make the Cup competition a comical farce of “nautical apples and oranges” and make a joke of the 137-year-old tradition of the America’s Cup, which has been contested by 12-meter yachts since 1958.
