Drug charges against Ryan Bethea, a wide receiver at the University of South Carolina, were dismissed after an informant denied making the telephone tip that police said led to Bethea’s arrest more than five months ago.
Prosecutor James Anders also said the arresting officer failed pertinent parts of a lie-detector test and has been suspended without pay pending an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division.
South Carolina Coach Joe Morrison, who suspended Bethea after the arrest, said that he was pleased with the decision but did not comment on Bethea’s playing status.
