An 81-year-old retired Chula Vista man was killed and two others were injured Thursday night when the man’s car struck two eastbound cars and a van on Palm Avenue in San Diego, police said.
Nicholas Kozachenko of the 300 block of Oxford Street was pronounced dead at 6:45 at the scene of the accident, which occurred just east of Harris Street, according to Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton.
Witnesses told police that Kozachenko was driving west erratically when he crossed into eastbound traffic and hit the three vehicles.
Two occupants of one of the vehicles struck by Kozachenko, John Cross, 18, and his mother, Joan Cross, were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center and released after treatment. No other injuries were reported.
Kozachenko’s family told police that Kozachenko suffered from diabetes and had blacked out before. Bolton said the coroner’s office is investigating the possibility that such a blackout caused the accident.
