Louisiana state troopers patrolled New Orleans streets to make up for an apparent sickout by more than 300 officers upset over low wages and the lack of a labor contract. Police Chief Warren Woodfork said streets were probably safer than usual because of the 60 troopers in the city. There were 143 officers and troopers on patrol, compared with the usual contingent of 83, police said. Woodfork said his department could maintain security in the city even if police union members carry out a threat to stop work during next month’s Republican National Convention.
