Local News in Brief : Ventura Freeway Closings Continue

Most of the westbound lanes along nearly four miles of the Ventura Freeway will be closed this morning and again tonight as bridge-widening work continues for the fourth weekend.
Until 11 a.m. today, only the left-hand lane will be open from Winnetka Avenue to Canoga Avenue, the state Department of Transportation said. The Tampa, Winnetka and De Soto avenue westbound on-ramps will be closed this morning and again beginning at 9 p.m.
The Canoga Avenue off-ramp will also be closed this morning.
Beginning tonight at 9, workers will again begin closing westbound lanes. By 11:30 p.m., only the right-hand lane west will remain open.
The disruptions, which began Friday night, will end at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Caltrans advises travelers to choose alternate routes to avoid freeway congestion. During the first two weekends of bridge work, few problems were reported. Last weekend, however, a car fire and other problems caused 2 1/2-mile-long traffic tie-ups, a Caltrans official said.
Even so, figures released by the agency show that drivers apparently are heeding warnings to stay away. For instance, on June 11, a Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m., 9,450 cars were counted on the freeway. In a comparable period July 9, about 6,000 cars were counted, Caltrans said.
