Local News in Brief : Health Club to Admit Men
- Share via
The Women Only health club has agreed to accept male members in a settlement of a sexual discrimination suit filed by a man whose application had been rejected.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gary Klausner signed a stipulated judgment Tuesday in which the health club owners agree to “permit males to become members at any of (the club’s) locations under the same terms and conditions as its female members.” In addition, the club will give Anthony Flacco, 38, a former legal secretary, a one-year membership free of charge.
But the judge also ruled that the health club can require male members to notify the gym 24 hours in advance of using its facilities.
In March, 1987, Flacco tried to join the Women Only club in Studio City but was rejected. Attorney Gloria Allred filed suit on his behalf, alleging a violation of his civil rights.
The Women Only chain, which has three clubs in Los Angeles and one in Orange County, gears its programs toward women who feel uncomfortable exercising with men.
