Quaker Oats Co. said it has asked the New York Stock Exchange and the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate trading in its stock, which has jumped recently on rumors of a possible takeover. The company also reported a 32% rise in quarterly earnings, but analysts said the stock rise could not be attributed to the results. Stock in the Chicago-based food company leaped $5.25 to $58 in early trading on the NYSE before slipping back to $53.50 at mid-afternoon. The stock closed at $46.75 last Friday.
