Local News in Brief : Countywide : Water-Base Paint Disposal Planned

A free collection site for the disposal of leftover latex, water-base paints, considered environmentally unsafe if dumped with garbage, has been arranged by the Orange County Fire Department’s hazardous materials office this weekend in Huntington Beach.

Only latex paints will be accepted Saturday at Rainbow Transfer and Recycling, 17121 Nichols St.

Sandi Schafer, Fire Department project manager, said collection hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a maximum of 5 gallons per visit.

Schafer said it would be helpful for residents to consolidate their latex paints, and paint cans should be brought in as full as possible. She said empty paint cans are safe for regular trash pickups if they are air-dried.

Other household toxics, including oil-base paints, will not be accepted until collection sites are available later in August and September, she said.
