A man and his roommate were severely hurt after their car smashed into a power pole near Van Nuys Municipal Airport, police said.
Todd Reed, 24, the driver of the vehicle, was in a coma with a head injury, multiple fractures and internal injuries at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. His roommate, Thomas Winfrey, 31, was being treated for multiple fractures and internal injuries at UCLA Medical Center.
The two Sepulveda residents were driving west on Roscoe Boulevard at Hayvenhurst Avenue when their Volkswagen crashed into the pole about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, officer Frank Zdroy said. The car slid sideways and the driver’s side hit the pole, Zdroy said. He said the two men had to be pried out of the car.
Zdroy said the car was speeding in a 35 m.p.h. zone. “That’s probably what the primary cause was,” he added.
