San Diego State University fraternities and sororities presented a check for $17,000 Monday to the San Diego AIDS Project. The money was raised by the university’s 17 fraternities and 11 sororities during their Greek Week last spring.
The president of the Interfraternity Council, Tom Bulowski, said the AIDS Project was chosen because of the increasing number of incidents of the disease on college campuses. He said the focus on AIDS during Greek Week gave students more information about the disease and ways to prevent infection by the AIDS virus, he said.
In addition, the donation to the AIDS Project as well as smaller donations to other community organizations are efforts to improve the image of fraternities and sororities, he said. “It’s time for fraternities to shed the negative image portrayed in films like ‘Animal House,’ ” Bulowski said.
