Danny Sullivan won his seventh pole of the Indy car season, setting a 1-mile world-record qualifying speed of 172.158 m.p.h. for today’s Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix at Pennsylvania International Raceway in Nazareth, Pa.

Sullivan smashed Mario Andretti’s 2-year-old record of 165.776 m.p.h., set at Phoenix.

Sullivan, the CART-PPG series leader, added 1 point to his total for winning the pole and now has 129 to 123 for Bobby Rahal, the two-time defending champion.

Sullivan’s Penske Racing teammate, Rick Mears, qualified second for the 200-mile race, followed by Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi (winner of the last 2 CART races) and Rahal.
