Saddleback 21, Serra 12--Fullback Kendrick Iles ran for 110 yards in 18 carries to lead Saddleback High School to its first victory in a nonleague game at Serra.
But the Roadrunners’ victory could have been a lot closer if Serra hadn’t stopped a pair of fourth-quarter drives with penalties. Serra’s Brian Manyweather also dropped a pass in the end zone in that quarter that could have brought the Cavaliers within 3 points.
Iles scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 22 yards. Both of his scoring runs came on bursts off right tackle and on the 22-yarder, Iles went into the end zone untouched.
Saddleback (1-3) scored another touchdown when quarterback Jeff Blanco hit Juan Acuna, who was wide open in the center of the end zone, with a 7-yard pass. That touchdown was set up by a 30-yard breakaway run by Iles to the Serra 19.
The Cavaliers threatened late in the fourth quarter when cornerback Chris Cabaong picked off a Blanco pass and returned it 55 yards along the right sideline to the Saddleback 13. But a pair of penalties, a sack of quarterback Glenn Baham and Manyweather’s drop ended the rally.
Serra (1-3) scored on a 38-yard pass from Baham to Manyweather and on an 18-yard run by Grant Simmons.
Saddleback tailback J.J. Fejeran added 41 yards on 7 carries and Blanco completed 7 of 11 passes for 68 yards.
