Delegates from 65 countries agreed to a global ban by 1994 on the burning of chemical waste at sea, sources at an international conference in London said. Denmark had called for the worldwide ban by 1990, but delegates agreed to the 1994 date after negotiations, one source said. Waste is now burned at sea in special incinerator ships. Environmentalists regard a global ban as a major breakthrough in efforts to stop marine life from being poisoned by toxic waste.
