Winter Arrives Early as Freezing Air Chills Midwest, Northeast

A dome of high pressure reached from the central Plains states to New England today, spreading cold Canadian air over the Midwest and the East.
The mercury dipped to 28 degrees at Rockford, Ill., tying the record for the date set in 1952 and equaled a year ago.
Low temperatures in the morning fell below freezing over northern New England, eastern New York state, central and southern Wisconsin, northwest Illinois, parts of Iowa and the Dakotas, the central Appalachians and the central Rockies.
Frost advisories were posted for tonight and early Saturday for southwest Indiana and eastern Kentucky. Frost and freeze warnings were in effect for western Pennsylvania and the mountains of North Carolina.
Showers extended from the lower Great Lakes to western New England in the afternoon. Showers and a few thunderstorms also were reported from western Arkansas to northern and central New Mexico, and over southern Florida.
High temperatures stayed below the 60-degree mark from the middle and northern Atlantic Coast to the middle and upper Mississippi Valley, and from northern Oklahoma to southern Nebraska.
