Local News in Brief : Carpeteria to Settle Suit, Pay $40,000

Carpeteria Inc. has agreed to pay $30,000 in civil penalties and $10,000 in investigative costs to settle a consumer protection lawsuit accusing it of misleading newspaper and television advertising.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, which filed the lawsuit, said Carpeteria claimed in ads that began running in July, 1987, that it would install five rooms with carpeting at one low price.
The ads left the impression that the offer applied to rooms of any size, but contained a disclaimer in small, barely readable type stating that the offer was good for only 75 square yards, Deputy Dist. Atty. Louis Ito said.
