A ninth-grade student was wounded Tuesday morning as he was walking to Locke High School in what authorities termed an apparent gang-related shooting.
A bullet grazed George Hernandez, 16, just above the eye in the 10:35 a.m. shooting on San Pedro Street outside Samuel Gompers Intermediate School, two blocks south of the Watts-area Locke High. School officials said Hernandez was shot by the driver of a brown Cadillac after the pair exchanged gang hand signs.
Hernandez was able to reach Locke without assistance, where he was treated by a school nurse before being transported by city paramedics to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.
