A Municipal Court judge under investigation for allegedly offering lenient treatment to prostitutes in exchange for sex has reported receiving threatening telephone calls, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
Municipal Judge Brian R. Carter filed a police report after someone telephoned his Corona del Mar residence Sunday afternoon, asked whether it was the judge’s home, then said: “Tell him he is a dead man.”
Officer Robert Oakley said the judge also reported another similar threat by an anonymous caller three months earlier.
The judge attributed the threats to “bad publicity” surrounding the investigation.
Carter and fellow Harbor Municipal Judge Calvin P. Schmidt are under investigation by the state Commission on Judicial Performance for allegedly showing favoritism toward women with whom they have had personal relationships, in addition to offering lenient treatment to prostitutes.
