El Camino Real quarterback Steve Smith connected with wide receiver Peter Pistone on a fourth-quarter touchdown pass and again on the 2-point conversion, lifting the Conquistadores to an 8-7 Northwest Valley Conference victory over Chatsworth Friday at Pierce College.
Pistone made a diving catch in the back of the end zone on a 37-yard pass from Smith with 1:56 left. The touchdown concluded a 5-play, 72-yard drive, the Conquistadores’ longest of the night. The 2-point conversion pass completed the upset.
Chatsworth fell short on its last possession when El Camino Real defensive back Schaun Reed intercepted quarterback Tyler Johnson’s pass and raced 28 yards to the Chancellors’ 34-yard line with 17 seconds left.
Chatsworth took a 7-0 lead after a 1-yard touchdown by fullback Jeff Jones with 2:04 left in the first quarter. Jones recovered a Smith fumble on the 10-yard line 2 minutes earlier to set up Chatsworth’s score.
Chatsworth had another chance to score in the third quarter when the Chancellors drove to El Camino Real’s 31-yard line, but running back Isaac Kyle fumbled.
Smith, who completed 5 of 15 passes for 158 yards, fumbled 3 times and threw 3 interceptions. El Camino Real fullback Jamal Anderson rushed for a game-high 48 yards in 14 carries.
Chatsworth managed only 44 total yards. Kyle led the Chancellors with 32 yards in 12 carries and Johnson completed 3 of 14 passes for 28 yards and threw 3 interceptions.
