Haunting Memories

We always enjoy Jerry Hulse’s articles, but particularly want to compliment him on “Kauai” (Sept. 25) about the new Westin Kauai and Kauai in general. We are longtime visitors to Kauai, which has been our favorite vacation place since 1976. Our first visit was in 1971, so we have seen many changes. Our last visit was in September, 1987. We were there for our usual four- to six-week stay when the Westin Kauai opened.
Hulse’s description almost duplicated ours to family and friends. We invited the Hamabatas from Green Gardens for an overnight visit, and they said: “It’s grandiose, but it is not Hawaii!” Most Hawaiian residents feel that way, too. It seems that Hulse’s “haunts” of old Kauai are ours also. The older Garden Isle cottages (washed away in Hurricane Iwa) on Hoona Road used to be our “home.” Now we stay in the one cottage remaining there.
