Local News in Brief : L.A. Rejects Motel Plan 3rd Time in 6 Months

For the third time in 6 months, Los Angeles has denied a developer’s plan to build a motel next to a residential neighborhood in Eagle Rock.
The developer, Yu-Yuen Chao, wants to build a 2-story, 30-unit motel at 1871 Colorado Blvd. At a hearing in City Hall last week, Robert Janovici, the associate zoning administrator, denied the request.
He said the motel would be incompatible with plans to turn the street into a pedestrian-oriented shopping area. A land-use plan for the area is being developed by a citizen’s committee and Los Angeles city planners.
Chao had twice scaled down his plans. An original proposal for a 53-room, 3-story structure was denied because it exceeded the height limit for the site.
Neighbors have campaigned against the motel, which they say would bring noise, traffic and crime to their street. A service station is now on the site.
The developer can reapply or appeal the decision to the Los Angeles Board of Zoning Appeals, Janovici said.
