Thousands of students in three Polish centers of higher learning are boycotting military training and demanding an end to compulsory Russian-language classes, official and independent sources said. No arrests have been reported, but a government newspaper, Gazeta Krakowska, said the military office at Jagielonian University in the southern city of Krakow was damaged during a student rally. Government spokesman Jerzy Urban said the student dissidents at Jagielonian, Warsaw University and the Krakow Coal Mining and Foundry Academy may face “an unpleasant surprise” unless they halt the protest, but did not specify what measures may be taken.
