A 7-year-old Mexicali boy who was hospitalized for dehydration and other minor medical problems after he was lost for three days in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park may be released today, a Children’s Hospital official said.
Jesus Antonio (Pepin) Garcia is making “remarkable progress,” hospital spokeswoman Viki Hurst said Friday. The boys’ parents have kept a constant vigil by his bedside and are said to be anxious to go home.
Hurst said that the youngster’s hospital bill is running about $1,400 a day since he was taken to the intensive care unit Wednesday afternoon. Hospital officials are not sure who is going to pay the bill and, contrary to previous reports, said that a fund has not yet been established for contributions to help the family meet hospital expenses.
The parents, Antonio Garcia and Corina Morales, have been unavailable to the press since early Thursday morning.
Jesus wandered away from his family on Sunday, shortly after they arrived at the park for a day’s outing and picnic.
