Canyon’s Defense Leaves Nothing to Chance, 44-0

It was homecoming at Canyon High on Friday night for the Cowboys’ Golden League game against Quartz Hill, and one of the pregame floats boasted a banner that read, “Rebels Without a Cause,” an obvious reference to Quartz Hill’s chances.

Four quarters later, after Canyon had methodically pounded the Rebels, 44-0, behind tailback Chris Peery’s 3 touchdowns and quarterback Rod Baltau’s 2 scores, one could not help but see the banner as mere foreshadowing.

Quartz Hill certainly thought it had a cause--to stop the Cowboys’ 4-game winning streak. It’s just that the Rebels never had a chance--because the Canyon defense never gave them one.

Every Rebel ballcarrier was met by a wall of Cowboys, resulting in Quartz Hill’s embarrassing total of 1 first-half yard.

“I think we caught them on a down night,” Cowboy Coach Harry Welch said sympathetically as his team improved to 5-2, 2-0 in league play.

It’s a wonder that Quartz Hill (3-4, 0-2) even decided to show for the second half. After all, the Cowboys led, 30-0, and the suspense surrounding the choice of homecoming queen had been settled at the intermission.

Baltau finished the game completing 7 of 15 passes for 115 yards and Peery carried 14 times for 97 yards.
