Fall Sports Roundup : CLU Loses Ground in Playoff Bid

The Cal Lutheran women’s volleyball team traveled to Irvine on Tuesday hoping to move closer to an NAIA District 3 playoff berth. But a 15-11, 15-9, 12-15, 15-13 loss to Christ College in a Golden State Athletic Conference match hurt the Regals’ chances.

Cheryl Almond had a team-high 18 kills and teammate Samantha Bennett added 15 kills and 10 digs, but Cal Lutheran (10-13 overall) was unable to overcome a 2-game deficit. Kelley Magee added a team-high 31 assists and 10 digs for Cal Lutheran.

In order to qualify for the playoffs, which are based on District 3 rankings--not necessarily GSAC standings--the Regals must win their final 2 matches of the regular season against Azusa Pacific (Thursday) and Westmont (Saturday) and hope that some of the teams ranked ahead of them lose.

Glendale d. West L.A., 15-6, 15-10, 15-10--Sandy Phipps had 6 service aces and Shelly Treat had 11 kills for Glendale in the Western State Conference match.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Pierce 21, Valley 11--Greg Frasier and Mike Onyne each scored 5 goals for Pierce in the Western State Conference match at Pierce.

Dane Hurst added 4 goals for Pierce (14-6, 6-2), and Josh Foster had 4 goals for Valley (6-11, 2-5).

COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER

East L.A. 1, Mission 0--Visiting East L. A. (8-0-3, 4-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the Southern California Athletic Conference with the win.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Crespi 10, St. John Bosco 9 (OT)--Tom Woiwode scored 4 goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Celts (9-7, 4-2) to a Del Rey League victory.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ TENNIS

San Gabriel 10, Hart 7--Nance Lee of San Gabriel (11-5, 4-3) swept 3 singles matches in a Foothill League contest at Hart.

Kennedy 6, Cleveland 1--Kennedy (12-2, 6-2) swept singles play behind Barbara Hines, who remained undefeated in the Northwest Valley League match.

Louisville 13, Notre Dame 5--The team of Shellee Gautreau and Cathy Dy were 3-0 to lead Louisville (11-7, 7-1) in the San Fernando Valley League match.
