CAMPAIGN ’88 : McCarthy a Write-In
Former Minnesota Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy, who was “Clean Gene” to his youthful followers when he first ran for the presidency in 1968, will be a write-in candidate in California on Nov. 8.
His supporters filed the necessary papers with the California secretary of state’s office, meaning that whatever write-in votes he receives must be counted.
All that is required is that a candidate file a declaration of candidacy and name 47 voters pledged to him in the Electoral College.
McCarthy, 72, will be on the ballot in Pennsylvania, where he is the candidate of the Consumer Party, and in Minnesota, where he heads the ticket of the Minnesota Progressive Party.
He also will be a write-in candidate in Arizona and Missouri and is pursuing write-in efforts in several other states.
