CAMPAIGN ’88 : Latinos Favor Dukakis

A nationwide poll of Latinos who are likely to vote Tuesday found them supporting Dukakis by 58% to 36% over Republican George Bush, with 6% of those polled still undecided.

“There hasn’t been much change since the poll we took before the two political conventions in the summer, but what is interesting about that is that Dukakis has held steady with Latinos despite his apparent problems with the electorate as a whole,” said Sergio Bendixen, a Washington-based Democratic political consultant.

Bendixen conducted the survey for Univision Television Network, the largest Spanish-language network in the country. He polled 700 Latinos between Oct. 22 and 29 and used both telephone interviews and personal visits, to make sure he reached a sampling of potential voters who do not have phones. The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 4 points.

A similar poll taken early in July found Dukakis leading Bush by 58% to 32%.
