Surprising Americans Jim Courier and Dan Goldie failed to reach the final of the $642,500 Scandinavian tennis championships at Stockholm Saturday, losing in the semifinals.
Peter Lundgren of Sweden defeated Courier, 18, of Dade City, Fla., 6-3, 6-3. Third-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany sprained his ankle in the opening game but still defeated Goldie, of McLean, Va., 6-3, 6-2.
Becker’s injury forced him to withdraw from a doubles semifinal, but he hopes to be able to play today.
John McEnroe edged Switzerland’s Jakob Hlasek, 7-6, 6-4, and Soviet Andrei Chesnokov beat Israeli Amos Mansdorf, 7-6, 6-3, to reach the final of the $1-million tournament at Antwerp, Belgium.
McEnroe overcame 2 set points at 5-4 in the first set, then saved a third 2 games later to force a tiebreaker, which he won.
Martina Navratilova shrugged off an error by match officials to beat Gabriela Sabatini, 7-5, 6-3, and advance to the final of a $300,000 tournament at Worcester, Mass.
Navratilova will face Soviet teen-ager Natalia Zvereva, who upset second-seeded Chris Evert, 7-5, 7-6.
The United States defeated Britain, 7-0, in the Wightman Cup at London, the 13th sweep for the Americans in the 60-year history of the women’s team event.
Singles victories by Houston teammates Zina Garrison and Lori McNeil at the Royal Albert Hall stretched the Americans’ lead to 6-0, and Garrison teamed up in doubles with Gigi Fernandez to add the final point.
Hank Pfister and Tom Gullikson advanced to today’s final of the $40,000 Grand Champions tournament at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis Club with semifinal victories.
Pfister defeated Sherwood Stewart, 6-2, 6-3, and Gullikson eliminated Sandy Mayer, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
